Making an Impression
by Tony Clennell
My specialty over the years has been sectional or composite throwing where many pieces are added together to make one vessel. Students that normally cannot throw more than a few pounds of clay often throw with ease three to five times as much after the session.
My return to graduate school at Utah State University has opened up new thoughts, new tricks and new insights into making work that expresses the character of the maker.
Recent work has been an exploration of textures using roulettes, stamps and many found objects. The maker’s marks and details of process are what I am interested in leaving in the finished work.
I will include a Power Point presentation on “Production versus One-Offs” -a potters' four-month observation of porcelain production in Jingdezhen, China.
When: Saturday, Sunday February 12th-13th 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Where: 415c Picadilly Ave., side entry of St. Georges Church
(near Island Park and Richmond Rd.) Ottawa
Cost: Guild members $100, non members $125. Make cheque out to Ottawa Guild of Potters.
Food: Snacks provided, brown bag lunch
Mail cheque to Rona Bloomfield, Box 669 Almonte On. K0A1A0. Be sure to register before the end of January to make sure you get a space!
P.S. Tony's blog (smokieclennell.blogspot.com) shows his drole sense of humour and fine craftmanship. Have fun, be inspired and learn new skills. What more could you ask for! Come and turn in new directions.
