Debbie Gilmer
Why?
Crafting handmade stoneware pottery has been my passion for 23 years. I aim to create pottery that brings beauty to everyday life. Rich colour, robust form and skilled craftsmanship combine to create each gilmer clayworks original. Creating in clay allows the rich unknown within me to emerge into visible form.
My creative energy is fuelled by several things: by keen curiosity. what happens if I try this? by the beauty revealed to me every day in the people and things that surround me; by the value I place on truly functional design; and, by a Celtic spirituality in my life and work. This approach results in life and work that is whole, rhythmic, open to possibilities and blessed.
What?
My work is high-fired stoneware pottery designed for ease of use in every day life. I wish to combine function and beauty into each piece.
Carving patterns emerge from my wheel-thrown pots as if they lay sleeping in the clay, waiting to be coaxed out. I work with high quality glazes in rich colours like sea, moss, amber, cream and plum that complete the organic nature of my pieces and combine together to recall the Celtic seasons and solstices.
Where?
This Spring I will complete my teaching studio so consider joining me for some fun! Private, semi-private and group lessons begin this September.
My studio and home are nestled amongst mature pine and spruce trees on a sand bluff overlooking the South Nation River near South Mountain in Dundas County, Ontario. Canada. Like all the villages and small hamlets along the banks of this little river, South Mountain relies on local agriculture for its commerce. Dovetailing into this stable base are many small service businesses and workshops. The community works hard to support many local initiatives, including our artists' studio tour. In 2009, the 16th year of the On Common Ground Studio Tour, 25 artists and artisans will featured new work at 11 different studios dotting the countryside in and around South Mountain. Fresh creativity and helpful support from fellow artists plus warm, welcoming neighbours combine to provide many opportunities for artistic expression. South Mountain is truly a hidden jewel in the Eastern Ontario landscape.

My studio is open most of the time but please call ahead to avoid a near miss!
