Geraldine Petit-Gras

Géraldine Petit-Gras was born in Aix-en-Provence (France) in 1977. She has been living in Ottawa since 2002, including a brief passage in Saskatchewan.

She graduated from the diploma program of the Ottawa School of Art in 2009, where, she developed early on a strong affinity for ceramics as a medium. Two of its main characteristics strongly appealed to her. First, its versatile and inclusive properties allow for the use of a wide variety of techniques without limiting the artist in its creativity. Second, once fired, clay outlasts the maker and holds its memory.

As a member of the Glebe Community Centre pottery studio since Septembre 2009, she is able to tackle new projects. She recently opted to work with a more porcelaineous ware for its translucent properties. Her creations draw from a sea-like imagery as well as from myths and symbols of Mediterranean inspiration. Contemporary in her approach, she relishes the use of other mediums, such as sea salt crystals, perfume and resin, to add to the meaning of the work itself. Her sculptures evoke the duality of the outer gesture and inner emotions.

Géraldine is part of a group of like-minded artists with whom she formed IN FLUX in 2008. Its members are Francine Bellanger, Micheline de Bellefeuille, Maryl Morris, Géraldine Petit-Gras and Isobel Salole. They draw from the group synergy to create opportunities to show together their sculptural ceramics while keeping their own artistic voices. The first exhibit of IN FLUX, called "Emergence", was a huge success.

My work can be purchased anytime by contacting me directly. I also have work at the Ottawa School of Art (35 George St., Ottawa, ON).
