My career in clay began with a course in sculpture at the Ottawa School of Art in 1986. I made a life size bust of a model in clay. I created a plaster mold of her and she was cast in concrete. I never had so much fun! So, that was the beginning... I went on to establish my own company, Cosmoz Design (Capricious Compositions of a Peculiar Nature) creating garden sculptures of mythological beings cast in concrete. I started working in ceramics, one of a kind fired sculptures, in 2016. This is a relatively new process for me, and I feel like I've really just begun. There is so much to learn and try!
I have been an artist always, it seems… and explored oil painting, print making, paper making, multi media, working in concrete … and clay. I think each medium I have experimented with can only have contributed in some way in allowing me to express myself creatively and comes forth in my present pieces. I love the process of allowing the clay to express itself. I often do sculptures of people and animals. I love how those characters take shape. They seem to emerge out of the clay with a volition of their own. I would like to touch people on an emotional level. I would like to uplift their hearts or invite them to look deeper. The poet Rumi said "Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray".
